Franz liszt images10/28/2023 ![]() During this period and into his later life, Liszt was a friend, musical promoter and benefactor to many composers of his time, including Frédéric Chopin, Charles-Valentin Alkan, César Franck, Richard Wagner, Hector Berlioz, Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, Camille Saint-Saëns, Edvard Grieg, Ole Bull, Joachim Raff, Mikhail Glinka, and Alexander Borodin. In what has now been dubbed " Lisztomania", he rose to a degree of stardom and popularity among the public not experienced by the virtuosos who preceded him - whereas earlier performers mostly served the upper class, Liszt attracted a more general audience. In these years, Liszt developed a reputation for his powerful performances as well as his physical attractiveness. Regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time, he toured Europe during the 1830s and 1840s, often playing for charity. Liszt first gained renown during the early nineteenth century for his virtuoso skill as a pianist. With a diverse body of work spanning more than six decades, he is considered to be one of the most prolific and influential composers of his era and remains one of the most popular composers in modern concert piano repertoire. The year is 1840 the place is a salon in Paris. Liszt (at the age of 29) performing at the piano. This work is now owned by the Musée Carnavalet, Paris, France. This painting of Liszt was done by Henri Lehmann in 1838. Long before the days of Beatlemania, there was Lisztomania, and Liszt had crowds of frenzied female fans at his concerts. Liszt had the appearance of a tall, dark, handsome rock star. Liszt music includes piano concertos, symphonies, symphonic poems, sacred choral works, and many works for the solo piano (such as the Liebesträume ). Liszt was perhaps the greatest piano virtuoso of his era as well as being one of the great composers of the Romantic era.
